General Information Page Concrete Engraving Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Eastern Iowa

Innovative Concrete Engraving specializes in chemical staining and engraving that creates a one of a kind floor that cannot be duplicated. Each concrete surface will accept the stains differently based on chemical makeup, age, porosity, mix design, texture, ambient conditions and initial color of the substrate. The stains react chemically at the surface, penetrating and leaving unique permanent color effects. This is a stain, not an overlay or slurry mixture, it will never peel, crack, or chip.
The process of concrete engraving & staining involves the following:
• The perimeter of the concrete is edged to remove any dirt or grass from the surface.
• The concrete is thoroughly cleaned. All grease spots, oil residue, paint stains, etc. are neutralized and pressure washed.
• The concrete is acid etched if needed to provide a bond for the stain to the concrete.
• Cracks, if any, are repaired. (Though sometimes cracks are left in the concrete, which produces and aged brick or stone look)
• The penetrating concrete stain is applied.
• The design of your choice is engraved into your existing concrete.
• The job site is cleaned up.
• The sealer is applied

Stains & Sealants

Acid Stains
Acid Stain is not paint or a type of coating agent; rather, it's a coloring process involving a chemical reaction on a cementitious material. The color affect is unique to each stained surface and cannot be duplicated with other materials. A solution made with water, acid and inorganic salts, reacts with minerals already present in the concrete, and the result of this reaction is color. It works very well on new or old concrete. Acid Stain is a very durable product if properly protected with sealer or wax, and it can be applied to both interiors and exteriors. Acid stained interior floor surfaces are quickly replacing those areas where carpet used to be the norm.
What makes Acid Stain so attractive? Acid Stain gives concrete a mottled, variegated, marble-like look. Acid stained floors won't chip or crack like tile. The stain becomes part of the surface and is fade resistant, abrasion resistant, and won't peel. Stained surfaces are striking in appearance and add an artistic approach to flooring. The stain creates uneven, variegated and translucent color effects.
Many unique designs are possible. To achieve a special color effect, two or more stain colors may be intermixed before application or applied one over the other while wet. Deeper colors can be produced by using the same stain for two or more applications to the surface. The options on what look to achieve are limited only by one's imagination.

Pigmented Stains
Pigmented stains actually bond with concrete to form a tough shield. Because of this bonding process, concrete coatings will not fade, peel, or flake and they will maintain their attractive appearance for many years to come. Pigmented stain is the ideal finish designed to ad deeply penetrating protection and long lasting beauty to concrete surfaces such as driveways, patios, walkways, and garage floors. These concrete stains are highly resistant to abrasion. There are different pigmented stains applied to exterior and interior surfaces.
